What Is a Hernia?

A hernia occurs when an internal organ or fatty tissue pushes through a weak spot in the surrounding muscle wall — and unlike a bruise or muscle strain, a hernia will not heal on its own. Without treatment, most hernias gradually enlarge and can lead to serious, even life-threatening complications.

The good news: hernia repair is one of the most commonly performed and well-understood operations in modern medicine, and Dr. Johannes offers both traditional and advanced robotic techniques tailored to each patient’s needs.

The Three Most Common Types

Inguinal Hernia

The most common type — tissue pushes through the inguinal canal in the groin area. More frequent in men. Often appears as a bulge in the groin, more visible when standing or coughing.

Umbilical Hernia

Develops near the belly button when tissue protrudes through a weakness in the navel area. Common in adults who are overweight or have had multiple pregnancies.

Incisional Hernia

Occurs through or near a previous abdominal surgical scar. Can develop months or years after a prior surgery such as a C-section or appendectomy.

Symptoms — And When to Seek Care

Common Hernia Symptoms

  • A visible bulge or lump in the groin, abdomen, or around the belly button — often more noticeable when standing, coughing, or straining
  • A dull aching, pressure, or heaviness at the site, especially after physical activity or prolonged standing
  • Pain or discomfort that worsens with coughing, sneezing, bending, or lifting
  • Occasional sharp or burning pain at the hernia site
  • In men: swelling or discomfort around the testicles if a groin hernia has descended

⚠️ Seek Emergency Care Immediately If You Experience:

  • A hernia bulge that suddenly becomes hard, dark, or cannot be pushed back in
  • Severe, rapidly worsening pain at the hernia site
  • Nausea, vomiting, or inability to pass gas along with hernia pain
  • Fever combined with pain at the hernia site
  • Redness or skin discoloration over the hernia

These may be signs of a strangulated hernia — a surgical emergency where blood supply to the herniated tissue is cut off. Do not wait for a scheduled appointment. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room immediately.

Hernia repair surgery — laparoscopic and robotic techniques at Summit General Surgery in Montrose, CO

Our Surgical Approach

Dr. Johannes performs hernia repair using proven techniques matched to each patient’s specific situation — including both laparoscopic and advanced robotic-assisted surgery. A soft, flexible surgical mesh is used to reinforce the weakened area of the abdominal wall in most repairs. Your body’s own tissue integrates with the mesh over time, creating a durable, long-lasting result with a recurrence rate of less than 1–5% for most hernia types.

Laparoscopic Hernia Repair

Laparoscopic surgery uses small incisions and a tiny camera to perform the repair. Compared to traditional open surgery, laparoscopic repair typically involves less postoperative pain, smaller scars, and a faster return to daily activities. It is well-suited for many inguinal, umbilical, and incisional hernias.

🤖 Robotic-Assisted Hernia Repair — Available at Summit General Surgery

Dr. Johannes is trained in robotic-assisted hernia surgery — one of the most advanced approaches available today. Using the da Vinci® Surgical System, Dr. Johannes controls robotic instruments from a console with a magnified, high-definition 3D view of the surgical area. The robotic arms translate her precise hand movements into highly controlled micro-movements inside the body.

Benefits of robotic hernia repair for patients include:

  • Greater surgical precision — robotic instruments can rotate 360° with a range of motion beyond the human wrist, allowing meticulous repair in tight spaces
  • Better visualization — the surgeon works with a magnified 3D HD view of the repair site, improving accuracy
  • Reduced risk of nerve and tissue damage — especially valuable for complex, large, or recurrent hernias where surrounding structures require careful handling
  • Less blood loss — precise instrumentation reduces inadvertent tissue disruption
  • Potentially faster recovery — smaller incisions and reduced tissue trauma compared to open surgery
  • Ideal for complex cases — robotic repair is particularly advantageous for large incisional hernias, recurrent hernias, and cases requiring significant tissue reconstruction or suturing

Not every hernia requires robotic surgery — Dr. Johannes will recommend the most appropriate technique based on your specific hernia type, size, history, and overall health. Her goal is always the safest, most effective repair for you personally.

What to Expect

Before Your Surgery

Once you and Dr. Johannes have agreed on a surgical plan, her team will guide you through preparation. You may need a brief medical evaluation, blood work, or imaging. Blood thinners and anti-inflammatory medications are typically paused before surgery — your care team will provide specific instructions. Plan to fast (no food or water) for at least 6–8 hours before your procedure, and arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you afterward.

During Surgery

Hernia repair surgery typically takes 30 to 90 minutes, depending on the type, size, and complexity of the repair. You will be under general anesthesia throughout. Your vital signs and oxygen levels are continuously monitored by the anesthesia team. When the repair is complete, incisions are closed with absorbable sutures and covered with small bandages.

Recovery Timeline

Days 1–3

Rest at home with gentle short walks. Expect soreness and swelling at incision sites. Take prescribed pain medication as directed. No lifting over 10–15 lbs.

Days 3–7

Pain noticeably improves for most patients. Resume light daily activities. Taper to over-the-counter pain relief. Keep incision sites clean and dry.

Weeks 1–2

Many patients with desk or office jobs return to work. Continue avoiding heavy lifting and strenuous exercise. Follow-up appointment with Dr. Johannes to assess healing.

Weeks 3–6

Cleared for progressive activity and gym workouts in most cases. Physical or manual labor workers typically return to full duties by 4–6 weeks.
